Soothing Scents: The Benefits of Using Essential Oils with Your Little One

Of course, babies can be little bundles of joy, but let's be real, they can also be little bundles of stress. That's where essential oils come in! These magical little scents can work wonders on both you and your little one. Although most adults are comfortable with using essential oils for various reasons, before you start dousing your baby in oils, remember to always dilute them properly and do your research to make sure they are safe for your little one. And as always, when in doubt, consult with your pediatrician.

All this is leading to our March Foreverly Box! This month we included a lavender oil roller in our Foreverly Boxes. Good News: Lavender is well known as one of the best, mildest, gentlest - and safest - essential oils for babies. Plus it's fab for mamas, too!

Once you have a brand new little one to take care of, you want to do everything you can to keep them happy and healthy. Here are some benefits of using essential oils with your baby & tips for how to use them safely:

  1. Sleep like a baby: Lavender oil has been shown to promote relaxation & improve sleep quality. And let's face it, when your baby sleeps well, everyone sleeps well.

  2. Bye-bye diaper rash: Tea tree oil has antibacterial & anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe & heal diaper rash. Plus, it smells a lot better than most diaper creams.

  3. Calm those colic cries: Peppermint oil can help ease tummy troubles & reduce colic symptoms. Plus, it might even freshen up that stinky diaper smell.

  4. Boost that immune system: Eucalyptus oil has antiviral & antimicrobial properties that can help defend against colds & flu. Just make sure to use a diffuser & not apply it directly to your baby's skin.

  5. Safety first! Before using any essential oils with your baby, be sure to do your research and talk to your doctor. Some essential oils can be harmful or irritating to babies, especially if used improperly.

  6. Keep it simple. You don't need to use a ton of different oils to see benefits for your baby. Some great options to start with include lavender (for calming & sleep), chamomile (for soothing & digestion), & tea tree (for natural cleaning & skin care).

  7. Dilute, dilute, dilute. Essential oils are highly concentrated, so it's important to dilute them before using them on your baby. A good rule of thumb is to use 1-2 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil (such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil).

  8. Watch for signs of irritation. Even if you've done your research & diluted the oils properly, some babies may still have a reaction to certain oils. Keep an eye out for any signs of irritation, such as redness, rash, or fussiness.

Now, for some humor: Essential oils are like magic potions, but instead of turning you into a frog, they can help soothe your baby's tummy or ease their teething pain. And let's be real, anything that can help your baby sleep through the night is worth its weight in gold. So go ahead, mamas, & give essential oils a try! Just remember to do your research, dilute properly, & keep an eye out for any signs of irritation. Your baby (& your sanity) will thank you.

Now go forth and enjoy the sweet scents of parenthood!
